To some people, the term “Wedding DJ” alone sounds old fashioned. “Dated,” “boring,” or “corny” might be words that come to mind. Or perhaps they just shudder when they think about their friends and family groaning as the MC tells bad jokes or encourages everyone to do the Chicken Dance.

It happens to us all the time! Luckily, as wedding DJs, we organize our music in ways that allow us to quickly sort and access our library so that we always have access to the music we need most, just at the right time. But as you think about the music for your wedding, with a million other things on your mind, it might be easy to forget who sings that great song you heard on the radio the other day (it was probably Echosmith – Cool Kids, just guessing…).
There is a great, free solution that can help called Shazam.
There are a number of songs that your wedding DJ should ask you about as part of your music program planning. The big ones that we think of regularly are the first dance, any parents dances that we are doing, and the music that you will be introduced to. The cake cutting is another moment where you may want to choose a specific song, but it can be difficult to know where to start…

I’m sure you can’t tell from the above photo, but this wedding was in December. Very rarely do couples with December weddings get treated to such gorgeous weather, but Lisa and Jonathan were that couple, and they deserved such a great day. They were absolutely wonderful to work with for us. They had a vision for their music program, but gave us the flexibility to pivot if we needed to in order to make sure all of their guests had a great time.
When it comes to the first dance for your wedding, there is no wrong answer – whatever identifies you as a couple is what you should do. While many couples express that they are nervous about dancing in front of their family and friends, very few are actually judging your dancing. We advise our couples to really enjoy this moment as one of the few during your wedding that you’ll get to be alone as a couple. The vast majority of your wedding reception will include friends, relatives, and sometimes vendors that are both really excited to see you, but asking for just a tiny slice of your time. So, we hope that you savor that first dance together as a married couple.
