There are a number of songs that your wedding DJ should ask you about as part of your music program planning. The big ones that we think of regularly are the first dance, any parents dances that we are doing, and the music that you will be introduced to.  The cake cutting is another moment where you may want to choose a specific song, but it can be difficult to know where to start…

Cake Cutting

I honestly believe that the best place to start are songs that you considered for something else, but didn’t use. For example, if you had a close second place choice for your first dance, that might be a great song to frame your cake cutting. That song likely has meaning for you as a couple, and perhaps deserves a featured spot at your wedding.  Another possibility is paying homage to another couple in your family that might have an anniversary very close to your wedding date. Playing their first dance song might be a nice way to thank them for celebrating your marriage around the time they are also celebrating an anniversary.

There are some classic cake cutting songs that you might consider. James Taylor – How Sweet It Is, The Archies – Sugar Sugar, and The Four Tops – I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar, Pie, Honey Bunch)… And, while none of those songs are bad choices, they’re all fairly common.

We’ve put together a few suggestions for songs that we think would be appropriate, but hopefully you don’t hear at every wedding you attend this summer:

Taylor Swift – Today Was a Fairytale

Today Was a Fairytale is a bit reflective, which is a nice feel for the cake cutting.  Often the cake cutting represents the last “formal” event of a wedding before the dance floor is opened up until the end of the night.  Having a moment to reflect before continuing on to a night of partying with your family and friends feels appropriate in many respects.

Michael Bublé – How Sweet it Is

While most people know Michael Bublé for his standards, he puts a very different uptempo spin on How Sweet It Is.  So, if you like the classic messaging of James Taylor’s song, but want a more unique or upbeat sound for your wedding, this is a great choice.

Maroon 5 – Sugar

Sugar is destined to be a wedding classic, even the music video is about the band surprise dropping in on weddings!  If you’re looking to set the tone for more of a Top 40 style party late night, this could be a great choice to keep those toes tapping while you are cutting the cake.

Amos Lee – Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea has a lovely romantic indie feel to it.  For the right couple, I can envision this being a great setting for them to cut the cake and enjoy a very sweet moment together.

Blake Shelton – Honey Bee

I seem to be running into a lot more country fans in DC than I used to.  I’m not sure if the area has grown more accustomed to it, or if I’ve just got different couples reaching out to us about their weddings.  But an excellent modern choice for a cake cutting is Blake Shelton’s Honey Bee.

Like any other special dance for your wedding – there is an endless array of choices that you could consider.  But we hope that we got you off on the right foot with a few suggestions of how to start your search, and some options that you might consider!
